I am not typically a fan of age-gap love stories, but I found this one enjoyable. For some, the age difference can feel creepy, while others see it as a gold-digger’s tale. Nevertheless, many Japanese women do not view love and marriage in that way. After reaching a certain age, some choose to seek help from professional matchmakers. Others lose hope in finding love and succumb to peer pressure from their parents.

The drama “An Incurable Case of Love” explores both these situations. It depicts an age-gap romance that develops amid a matchmaking setup by parents.
The story begins with a young woman named Sakura Nanase, who is on a school trip to Tokyo. She visits the temple dedicated to the god of marriage. She wants to make a wish for better luck in love. Her goal is to avoid the bad experiences her female relatives faced.
If you’re interested, the temple is called Imado Temple, located at 1-5-22 Imado, Taito-ku, Tokyo. More details can be found here: https://imadojinja1063.crayonsite.net/ .
As Sakura leaves the temple, she sees an elderly lady fall to the ground and screams for help. A “shining knight,” named Kiari Tendo—a doctor at a local hospital—rushes to help her. In that moment, Sakura believes Kiari is “the one” due to his willingness to help and his gentle smile.
Fast speed up: this meeting helps Sakura make an important life decision. If Kiari is a doctor, then she wants to become a nurse to work alongside him. She hopes to find her fortune in love with him.
Sakura excels in nursing school and eventually gets a job at the same hospital as Dr. Tendo. Still, he has changed; he no longer wears his smile and treats her somewhat coldly. Nevertheless, he closely monitors her performance. He evaluates her work regularly. This fosters a more friendly and social atmosphere between doctors and patients.
Through her interactions with the patients, Sakura learns about various personal choices that have contributed to their illnesses. I believe this highlights a key need within Japanese hospitals: a more personal approach to patient care. Sometimes, even something as simple as unregulated tea can trigger illnesses we have never experienced before.
Did you know?
In Japan, the grading system for health checks uses a scale from A to F. Once you reach a certain age, you automatically get a D score. This happens because after turning 35, your likelihood of developing diseases like diabetes and heart issues increases.

Celebrities in the J-drama An Incurable Case of Love :
Takeru Satoh plays the character Kiari Tendo. He is one of the most well-known actors in Japanese society. He is cherished for his roles in “Kamen Rider” and “Rurouni Kenshin.” Takeru Satoh (佐藤 健, Satō Takeru) was born on March 21, 1989, in Saitama, Japan. He gained fame for his leading role as Ryotaro Nogami in the “Kamen Rider Den-O” franchise. He is also renowned for portraying Himura Kenshin in the live-action “Rurouni Kenshin” films and their sequels. Personally, I really enjoy “Rurouni Kenshin” as it closely resembles the anime version. It is reported that during filming, he performed all of his own stunts without using doubles.
Mone Kamishiraishi portrays the gentle character Sakura Nanase. Mone Kamishiraishi (上白石 萌音, Kamishiraishi Mone) was born on January 27, 1998, in Kagoshima, located in southern Japan. She is an award-winning Japanese singer and actress. She made her acting debut on stage in 2011. She also began her career in television and film that same year. Besides Japanese, she can speak English and a little bit of Spanish.
