Ossan’s Love: A Unique Take on LGBT Romance in Japan

In the world of real estate, our character Haruta is 33 years old. He has been unlucky in love and in his career. He attended the matchmaking parties with co-workers multiple times. However, his lack of confidence and self-esteem quickly pushes him to the side.

Haruta suffers a lot of challenges and manipulation from others. However, one long late work session turned into a surprising revelation. His Boss is in love with Haruta.

Well, Haruta’s Boss is the common representation of someone with skeletons in the closet. Someone who holds his feelings, orientation and wishes for years. In a creepy way, He also compiled a ton of pictures from Haruta in a folder and tried to lay low.

One day Haruta’s Boss decided to come clean to his wife and chase happiness, since he reached middle age. At the same time, The wife believes Haruta is a girl and her husband is having an affair with a girl at the office. She was quite surprised when she found out it was a guy.

Haruta’s childhood friend even said “ Gender doesn’t matter when it comes to love”. This was a response to a confused Haruta but a non-rejection look or behaviour.

Now the plot twists, as Haruta’s Boss is making a confession to Haruta.

One day, A new co-worker Maki , who makes living arrangements with Haruta, gets inside the shower with Haruta and kisses him. And it doesn’t stop there, he actually calls him “big”, among other things. No , you are not imagining pervert stuff. The big part is really referring to that body part.

The Drama itself is a funny and non-traditional romance drama. It is amusing since there are glances and moments that the conversations have multiple levels of maturity.

In 2018 The big entertainment TV Asahi produced this drama “Ossan’s Love” with partnership of  Dekkoo, a subscription streaming service with a focus on LGBT+ related content.

The drama now has multiple seasons and movies. The most recent Ossan’s Love Returns released in 2024, where Haruta and Maki are finally living together as newlyweds but the Boss is still around continuing the dramatic love triangle.

Please get the illusion that marriage is recognized. In real japan same-gender unions are not officially recognized. Some prefectures may issue a partnership certificate. This certificate provides some benefits. However, it does not offer equal rights to an official wedding.

This “Partnership Oath system” was released in 2015, to couples in Tokyo. Across years, it was spread across the other prefectures and cities. And now its available in 17 prefectures and 150 cities. However, the system is far from perfect.

The communities in Japan have similar challenges to those outside of Japan. The entertainment industry seems more open about it. They provide content at the same level as the traditional content.

What differs Japan, its non aggressive behavior about this community.

I will leave 2 video references to watch on Youtube, in case you want to explore the subject.
