Who is B’z ?
B’z, a prominent Japanese rock band, is the first Asian act inducted into the Hollywood Rock Walk. Their guitarist is recognized as a Gibson Signature Artist, reflecting their status. With over 75 million record sales in Japan, they maintain popularity through diverse styles, including dance-rock, hard rock, blues, and J-pop. Founded in 1988 by guitarist Tak Matsumoto, who sought a vocalist through a newspaper ad, Koshi Inaba joined as the lead singer. They chose the name B’z to avoid confusion with “AIDS.”
B’z initially refrained from touring after their debut, focusing on recording their second album, “Off the Lock,” and began their first tour in 1989. They gained rapid success with “Taiyou No Komachi Angel,” establishing a trend of every single reaching number one. Musically evolving, they transitioned from ’80s dance-rock to a harder sound with albums like “In the Life” and “Run,” culminating in the blues-influenced “The 7th Blues.”
In 1995, their eighth album, “Loose,” sold three million copies, while solo projects flourished for both members. Their best-of collections achieved record sales, and they released “Brotherhood” in 2000 and “Eleven” in 2001, expanding concert tours beyond Japan.
The 2000s saw international growth, including participation in the 2002 Japan/South Korea World Cup. They toured the U.S. after releasing “Big Machine” in 2003, yet remained focused on the Japanese market with successful mid-2000s albums.
In 2007, B’z became the first Asian band inducted into Hollywood’s Rock Walk, highlighting their global impact, commercial success, and artistic innovation over two decades, along with their ability to produce hits and engage a dedicated fan base.
