Manzai (漫才) is a traditional style of comedy in Japanese culture comparable to double act comedy or stand-up comedy.

Japanese comedy has been around for centuries, with one of the most popular and long-standing genres being manzai. Manzai is a form of stand-up comedy that typically involves two performers – a ‘straight man’ and a ‘funny man’ – trading jokes at rapid speed. The majority of the jokes are based around mutual misunderstandings, double-talk, puns, and other verbal gags.

Manzai has its origins in the 11th century, when two courtesans would entertain audience members by telling jokes and engaging in banter. The genre gradually became more popular, and by the Edo period, manzai was being performed by professional entertainers in red-light districts.

Nowadays, manzai is still hugely popular in Japan, with many annual competitions being held to find the best performers. If you’re ever in Japan and looking for a laugh, be sure to check out a manzai show – you won’t be disappointed!

There is even the out of standard path Kamiya, who discovered his true colors and its going through a gender change. The physical changes do show up at the Drama.
